- Standard Time
- ===============================================================
-
- The earth is divided into 24 time zones, each located 15 degrees (1hour)
-
- apart. Clocks are set to the same hour within each zone. The base position
-
- is the zero meridian of longitude that passes through Greenwich, England.
-
- Time zones to the east of Greenwich are numbered negatively, corresponding
-
- to the number of hours to be subtracted to equal Greewich time. Zones to
-
- west are numbered positively according to the number of hours to be added
-
- to achieve the base time. In navigational uses, clocks are often set to the
-
- local time in Greenwich. This is referred to as Greenwich mean time or GMT.
-
- Astronomers use this system but call it Universal Time or UT.
-
- In practice the time zones have been modified to conform to natural and
-
- political boundaries. In 1983 the time zones were altered to provide
-
- Alaska with a single time zone. The state is so large that it spanned
-
- four zones originally. Standard time in many countries may not coincide
-
- with the zone time. The U.S. time zones are the Atlantic, Eastern,
-
- Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, Hawaii/Aleutian and Samoa zones.
-
-
- The International Date Line runs along the 180th meridian. This is where
-
- the calendar dates are separated. Advance the date when crossing in a
-
- Westerly direction and subtract one day when crossing in an Easterly
-
- direction.

- Daylight Savings Time
- ===============================================================
-
- NOTE: Travelers should consult a travel agent or use the OAG Travel
-
- Planner or other similar publication before making plans. It is beyond
-
- the scope of this program to try to maintain accuracy with the many
-
- state and national governments around the world.
- _______________________________________________________________
-
- It is not normally necessary to select the Daylight Savings option if
-
- your computer time clock is reset to the correct local time as changes
-
- are made during the year.
-
- Adjusting the time to provide more daylight on winter mornings and on
-
- summer evenings is a common practice throughout the world.
-
- Several of the major time adjustment periods are listed below.
-
- U.S. Daylight Time: first Sunday in April - last Sunday in October
-
- British Summer Time: last Sunday March - last Sunday in October
-
- European Summer Time: last Sunday in March - last Sunday in September
-
- Brazilian Summer Time: middle of October - end of January (approximate)
-
- Australian Summer Time: end of October - 3rd Week of March (approximate)

- Other info...
-
- The Independent Soviet States encompass 11 time zones but have been
-
- maintaining their time one hour fast of standard time for each zone.
-
- China spans five zones but has the entire country on zone time minus
-
- eight hours with daylight savings time observed from April 12 to
-
- September 12.
-
- Many of the countries near the equator remain on standard time
-
- all year.

- General Information (see disclaimer below)
-
- ==============================================================
-
- This program was designed to provide an easy way for computer
-
- hobbyists to the see how the current time in other parts of the world
-
- differs in relation to their own. The distance calculation feature
-
- will give a general idea of how far apart two locations are.
-
- Click on the diamond shaped button that corresponds to your location
-
- to display the times.
-

- Distance Calculation
- ===============================================================
-
- Global Time distance estimates are provided by computing the mileage
-
- between two Longitude and Latitude points. This is the straight line
-
- distance and will vary from the usual travel routes. Longitude and
-
- Latitude coordinates are usually within a degree or two of the actual
-
- locations. The program will always display the mileage for the shortest
-
- way around the world. The map used here was designed to show the time
-
- zones clearly, as a result of this the Northern and Southern areas appear
-
- larger than normal in relation to areas near the equator.
